Photosynthesis Investigation
Aim: To investigate if carbon dioxide is used or created during photosynthesis.
Materials:
Method:
1) Measure 5 mL of hydrocarbonate indicator in each test tube
2) Put a leaf in tubes 1 and 2 so they are supported by the outside of the wall (underside of the leaf should face inwards)
3) Cover one test tube (holding a leaf) with tinfoil
4) Leave the tubes near light for 2 to 3 hours
Observations:
What did you see in each tube?
Tube 1
Tube 2
Tube 3
If carbon dioxide is added to the air, the indicator will turn yellow.
If carbon dioxide is used up from the air, the indicator will turn purple.
Materials:
- Hydrocarbonate indicator
- Leaves
- Test tubes x3
- Stoppers x3
- Test tube rack
- Measuring cylinder

3) Cover one test tube (holding a leaf) with tinfoil
4) Leave the tubes near light for 2 to 3 hours
Observations:
What did you see in each tube?
Tube 1
- The Hydrocarbonate Indicator had changed colour from the colour brown, to bright orange. The leaf had bits that had gone from green to brown.
Tube 2
- The leaf had stayed the same, apart from the indicator. The indicator also turned from brown to bright orange.
Tube 3
- Since there wasn't a leaf in this test tube, the only thing that had changed was the indicator. It had changed from the colour brown to bright yellow.
If carbon dioxide is added to the air, the indicator will turn yellow.
If carbon dioxide is used up from the air, the indicator will turn purple.
